Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne has been elected as the new Speaker of Sri Lanka’s 10th Parliament, following the resignation of former Speaker Asoka Ranwala on December 13.
His name was proposed by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Minister Bimal Rathnayake, the Leader of the House.
The appointment took place at the start of today’s parliamentary session.
Wickramaratne has completed his MBBS Degree at the University of Peradeniya, Post Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Quality and Patients Safety (PGDip HCQ&PS) at the University of Colombo, Master of Science (MSc) and Medical Administration at the University of Colombo.
He has served as a physician, Director of Medical Administration, and Deputy Director of the National Nephrology Specialized Hospital, Polonnaruwa.
Dr. Wickramaratne represents the National People’s Power (NPP) from the Polonnaruwa District. He secured 51,391 preferential votes in the recent general election.
