The Supreme Court has granted leave to proceed with the hearing of four Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed by a group of activists from the ‘Aragalaya’ protest movement today (August 1).

These petitions seek a ruling that their fundamental rights were violated by the police when they were unjustly arrested during protests near former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s private residence in Mirihana.

The Supreme Court judge bench, comprising Justices Vijith Malalgoda and Yasantha Kodagoda, granted leave to hear the petitions following an extended consideration of the presented facts, Ada Derana reported.

Meanwhile, the judge bench has dismissed four other petitions related to the same incident.
