The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has granted permission for the installation of certain accessories on three-wheelers, commonly known as trishaws.

This decision, announced by DMT Commissioner General Nishantha Anurudda Weerasinghe, was made after extensive consultations with three-wheeler associations and in compliance with the Motor Traffic Act.

Effective from Monday (10), the permission allows for modifications in thirty different categories, subject to a fee ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 2,500. However, some categories do not require any payment.

For a fee of Rs. 2,500, three-wheeler owners can modify their vehicles by converting the single-light main lap to a dual-light system and by making changes to the windscreen.

A charge of Rs. 1,000 applies for the replacement of Tungston lamps with LED lamps, installation of wind deflectors, modifications using fiber, and upgrading the brake system.

To add stainless steel modifications, a fee of Rs. 2,000 will be charged.

For the external installation of a muffler and the addition of side mirrors, a fee of Rs. 500 will be applicable.

It’s worth noting that there are five categories in which modifications can be made without any payment.
