Prison Break SL: HRCSL to summon all the connected parties

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) said that it will summon all the parties related recent break-ins into Welikada and Anuradhapura Prisons allegedly caused by then State Minister of Prisons Lohan Ratwatte.

In a statement, the HRCSL said that a Suo Moto (on its own motion) investigation has been commenced into the said incidents.

Accordingly, three HRCSL Regional Coordinating Officers visited the Anuradhapura Prison yesterday (15) to investigate the incident which allegedly took place on Sunday (12).

It is reported that Ratwattee who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol broke into Welikada and Anuradhaura Prisons. He had reportedly threatened Tamil prisoners detained under the PTA in Anuradhapura Prison at gunpoint.

Following the incidents, Ratwatte resigned from his ministerial portfolio of prisons. The President’s Media Division said that Ratwatte resigned after taking the responsibility for the break-ins.
