Former MP Ranjan Ramanayake who is currently serving a four-year prison sentence after he was found guilty of contempt of court, is expected to be released tomorrow (12) under the Presidential Pardon, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.

He said that the Presidential Pardon for Ramanayake is expected, marking National Prisoners’ Day which is scheduled on 12 September.

The Opposition Leader requested Ramanayake’s release under the Presidential Pardon last week. In a letter to the President, Premadasa said that Ramanayake always spoke the truth and stood for justice.

He also said in the letter that several appeals have been directed to free Ramanayake from the jail in recent time.

Meanwhile, Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge also requested the President to release Ramanayake.

In a letter, she said that since the government has pardoned several prisoners who had committed serious crimes already, letting Ramanayake to stay in jail for a less serious crime is unfortunate.

Ramanayake who is an outspoken politician in th country was convicted over his remarks alleging the majority of judges in Sri Lanka were corrupt.
