Sri Lanka to import oxygen from India

It has been decided to purchase 100 MT of oxygen from India per week, for COVID-19 treatment facilities, Ministry of Health announced today (14).

Health professionals and medical experts warned in recent time that Sri Lanka’s health system is reaching its maximum capacity with the rapid increase of COVID-19 patients and deaths owing to spread of delta varient islandwide. They said that COVID-19 deaths could rise in the future due to lack of oxygen.

Speaking in Parliament, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi recently said that two entities in Sri Lanka are producing nearly 77 tonnes of oxygen and 44 tonnes are being given to hospitals. She also said that steps were being taken to order 6 oxygen cylinders with a capacity of 20 MT per each from foreign countries as well.
