The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a significant increase in state sector salaries, which will take effect from January 2025. These reforms include salary hikes for government employees, ranging from 24% to 50%.

The President’s Media Division (PMD) announced that the Cabinet has granted approval to implement the recommendations from the Presidential Expert Committee, chaired by Udaya R. Seneviratne, aimed at addressing salary discrepancies in the government sector.

Beginning 1 January 2025, the basic salary for public service employees will rise by at least 24% for the lowest ranks, with increases ranging from 24% to over 50% for all public service professionals.

The committee, appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, also recommended doubling all annual salary increment values for government employees.

These salary increases will also be implemented for public corporations, boards and statutory bodies, universities, and the armed forces starting next year, according to the PMD.
