Bangladesh Protests: Students to Continue Demonstrations Despite SC Ruling

Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has scaled back a controversial government job quota system that had sparked deadly nationwide unrest last week.

The ruling has brought a temporary calm to the streets, but student leaders are determined to continue their demonstrations until their key demands are met.

These demands include the release of those jailed during the protests and the resignation of officials responsible for the violence.

The protests were ignited by opposition to a 30 percent job quota reserved for descendants of the 1971 liberation war veterans.

Under the new court ruling, 93 percent of government jobs will be awarded based on merit, while only 5 percent will be reserved for relatives of freedom fighters and 2 percent for ethnic minorities and transgender and disabled individuals.

The demonstrations began after the High Court reinstated the controversial quota system last month.

Tensions escalated into violence last week when members of the governing party attacked protesting students.
